Classes & Tutorials

Jatayu started as a gallery for my jewelry and later expanded to include jewelry making supplies for sale, classes/tutorials, and a student gallery. My name is Connie Fox and I am the instigator of this adventurous website. It is my hope that Jatayu is a good resource for you in creating great jewelry and for developing your jewelry skills.

What's on the horizon for Jatayu? I plan to offer periodic online video tutorials (free of cost), and some CDs that you can purchase as well. This plan is in its infancy but I hope you will be able to view a short video before Christmas, 2008.

Some of you have written and asked me if I have jewelry for sale. For now, I have chosen to place this effort on the back burner, and here is the reason. A year ago Jonna (a dear friend) and I were on a plane to Tucson. We easily moved into a deep conversation about our hopes and dreams related to jewelry. Our conversation led me to realize what aspect of my jewelry life provides me with the most satisfaction, and that is teaching. Seeing the happiness in students eyes as they learn this incredible art form is better than chocolate. Hmmm, well, almost. In furtherance of this goal, I started taking jewelry classes 7 hours (and now 12 hours) a week. Something had to recede in my life to allow for the amount of time I spend learning ---- selling jewelry is what I let go of.

A question I am frequently asked is "What does Jatayu mean?" First of all, it is pronounced Juh-tie-you. I know it is difficult to pronounce and almost impossible to spell. Every marketing book I have read directs people to name their business something short (I am OK on this one), something people can remember easily (oh well), and something they can spell (another oh well). Going against this well advised current was not easy, but inspiration won out. Jatayu is the name of an eagle in the revered east Indian spiritual text, the Ramayana. What was compelling to me about this great bird was his total devotion to what and whom he loved in life. It is the flight pattern I choose to fly.

Should you need assistance as you peruse this site, here are the people who help create Jatayu on a daily basis:

Molly Watt (Online Store Manager): phone: 888-350-6481, email address: molly@jatayu.com

Christine Shearer (Web Manager): email address: christine@jatayu.com

Jim Fox (Accounting): email address: jimfox@san.rr.com

Connie Fox – I guess, everything else. email address: cfox@san.rr.com

One last item. Let me give thanks to the people who have contributed to my evolution. I am grateful to each and every one of them.
