Spring Zing Jewelry Contest 2008 - Entries Page 4

Entry 016 - Randi Samuels - Website

This pendant and chain is made from a variety of raw metals - PMC, copper washers, copper wire, and silver wire. The pendant is made from textured and layered PMC. The center has a patina applied to give the look of bronze. The inset copper washer has been textured, antiqued, and dapped, and then the center has been filled with clear resin to protect the patination, and to give the piece some depth. The chain has copper links made from 16g copper wire (soldered, shaped, hammered, antiqued) connected by silver rings, made from 16g silver wire. The clasp uses a copper washer for loop (textured to match the pendant, antiqued, and dapped), and a silver toggle, made from 16g silver wire. The chain is removable, so the pendant can have a different look by hanging on a leather cord, or a silver snake chain.

Materials used were 24 gauge silver sheet, 22 gauge copper sheet, 10g, 16g, 22g, 24g silver wire, 18g brass wire, brass bolts, (purchased) silver sheet teardrops, (purchased)copper flowers and a silver leaf charm with attachments removed. Copper sheet was hammered against a curb, cut into squares, then heat textured. Silver and brass pieces were melted onto the copper with a torch and other elements were bolted. Squares were linked together with jump rings I made and finished with an s-clasp and kind of horseshoe shaped end.

The bezel was made using nickel silver that I etched and cut out with a circle cutter. I used copper pipe to make the bezel and filled it with and image and resin. The chain is copper, sterling silver and brass with hand beaded pearl and bali sterling accent and little brass birds. I like circles especially when they are off center. I think that is what makes this piece interesting along with the different metals.

The piece I have entered is a double strand with two pendants. Both pendants are entirely hand crafted by me. They are made of sterling silver and 14KT gold. The top pendant is a sterling silver circle made from from sheet silver. I soldered on a handcrafted tree made from 14KT gold wire and added some texture with a gold-smithing hammer. The bottom pendant is a sterling silver nest that was fused from scrap pieces of wire and then dapped into shape. I added a handmade sterling flower, made from sheet silver, chased and folded, and six 14KT gold eggs (for the mother of a family of six, for whom I made this necklace.) Both pendants hang on two different types of bought gold-filled chain. They connect in the back with a handmade gold clasp.

I made the handcrafted beads, and used argentium sterling wire. This particular chain is a vintage oxidized silver that I've cleaned and soldered so that it slips easily over one's head.
